A Little About the Bernedoodle Breed

A Bernedoodle is a combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. This can be a great temperament combo because we can combine the Bernese’s loyalty, goofiness, lower energy, and companionship, with the Poodle’s intelligence, human focus, drive to please, trainability, low to non-shed coats. So bernedoodles are typically characterized as great companions (they are obsessed with their humans), extremely smart and trainable, can have a nice steady energy level. They can be great for a variety of types of families and individuals - they are typically great with young kids, and with training, can be great for busy young families. They can also be great adventure buddies and loyal companions for folks in all life stages. Bernedoodles can also be great with new people and environments with early socialization training, but they also love just “being with their people”hanging on the couch.

Because of their low-non shed coats, they can be great for families and individuals with mild to moderate allergies. Because of their furnishings (the fluffiness around their muzzle, eyebrows, and legs), they have hair on their coat instead of fur. Because of this, bernedoodles can be considered moderate to high maintenance for grooming. They will need routine brushing and combing by their owners, plus professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Their coat characteristics also give them their great “teddy bear” look that we love.

Bernedoodles are characterized as very smart. Because of this, it is important to fill their need for mental stimulation and give them training and activities. They can be easy to train compared to some other breeds, but it is important to socialize them with new people and new environments during the first 12 months. The Bernese Mountain Dog was bred to be protective of their families and farms, so they can be aloof around strangers sometime as a breed, so if you want your bernedoodle enjoy new people and new surroundings, give them those experiences as a puppy both inside and outside the home! If you are able to put the time into training, especially the first 12 months, they can be dogs that can enjoy all aspects of your life because of their good and trained behavior.

One more characteristic to note is that bernedoodles are extremely loyal animals and love their family and pack. Because of this, they are great for folks who want a companion dog, and want to spend time with him/her. Bernedoodles do not necessarily work well with folks who out of the house a lot while they are left home, or would prefer a dog that can be a bit more independent. They are great with folks who want a bond with their pup and a pup that is considered a companion. Doodles also typically are great with other family dogs - and getting 2 doodles a year apart can be a great experience.
